Art and Design

The Art department currently has six long standing and experienced members of staff consisting of five teachers and one technician.

The Art rooms are purpose built and well resourced, with a wide range of art materials and equipment. The classrooms are fitted with state of the art facilities such as Interactive Whiteboards and Visualisers. Each room also has a suite of computers and these facilities are accessible to pupils both within lessons and after school to assist with independent learning and homework.

The Curriculum

Key Stage 3

Pupils in Years 7, 8 & 9 receive one 60 minute lesson a week with homework every two weeks, as is the policy at Hollingworth. Pupils are taught in mixed ability groups with class sizes of 25 or below. Progress is tracked and monitored in accordance with agreed procedure. Pupils complete a baseline assessment on entry in Year 7 and will receive six National Curriculum assessments a year.

Key Stage 4

Pupils in Years 10 & 11 receive between two and three 60 minute lessons a week with homework once a week. We offer three different GCSE two year courses: Unendorsed Art and Design, Graphics, and Textiles (40% examinations and 60% Controlled Assessment with the AQA examination board). Pupils are taught in mixed ability groups. Progress is tracked and monitored in accordance with agreed procedure. Pupils complete a range of both formal and informal assessments in the form of extended sketchbook activities in class and also mock and real examinations.

Revision/Catch-up Sessions

For the upper school, the Art department organises support sessions over several hours in a week, whereby coursework catch up and assessment guidance is offered. All year groups can access the computers and internet facilities in classrooms which are always available for pupils to use before school, during break and after school.
