History

The History department currently holds three long standing and experienced teachers.

The History rooms are each fitted with state of the art facilities such as Interactive Whiteboards and Visualisers. Each room also has a suite of computers and these facilities are accessible to pupils both within lessons and after school to assist with independent learning and homework.

The Curriculum

Key Stage 3

Pupils in Years 7, 8 & 9 receive one 60 minute lesson a week with homework each fortnight, as is the policy at Hollingworth. Pupils are taught in mixed ability groups with class sizes of 30 or below. Progress is tracked and monitored in accordance with agreed procedure. Pupils complete a baseline assessment on entry in Year 7 and will receive between three and six National Curriculum assessments a year. In Year 9 there is an option to study 2 hours of history as part of our preference curriculum.

Key Stage 4

Pupils in Years 10 & 11 receive three 60 minute lessons a week with homework once to twice a week. The two year GCSE course is Specification B: The Modern World with the AQA examination board. (75% examinations and 25% controlled assessment). Pupils are taught in mixed ability groups. Progress is tracked and monitored in accordance with agreed procedure. Pupils complete a range of both formal and informal assessments in the form of extended writing activities in class and also mock and real examinations.

Revision/Catch-up Sessions

For upper school, the History department organises support sessions over several hours each week, whereby intensive revision programmes, assessment guidance and mentoring support is offered. All year groups can access the computers and internet facilities which are always available for pupils to use.

Several evening revision classes are also held each week.

Enrichment

The History department runs an annual trip to the Belgian Battlefields in KS3 and several trips and visits to Munich and Berlin in KS4.
