Extended Curriculum

After School Clubs

Extra-curricular sporting activity is very important to the success of the department. Activities range from clubs which target and attract pupils of all abilities, to teams that attract elite athletes who compete in competitions both on a local and national level. Activities on offer include:

Each year we celebrate sporting achievement at Hollingworth by inviting all those pupils who have been involved in extra-curricular sport to our Awards Evening. This takes place at the end of each year at Rochdale Football Club. Each extra-curricular activity leader or team manager nominates an award winner for each sport, based on personal achievement and/or attitude. We also present a girls and boys overall Sports Personality of the Year award.

Enrichment

The PE department is active in organising trips that enrich the curriculum. Many of these take place after school, at weekends and during school holidays. GCSE enrichment/assessment opportunities are as follows:

GCSE PE Coniston Trip

Pupils are assessed, during a weekend, in orienteering and either kayaking or rock climbing. This takes place at Water Park Lakeland Adventure Centre on Coniston Water each September.

Mountain Walking

Pupils are briefed and taught the basics of orienteering, first aid and survival techniques associated with mountain walking in GCSE PE lessons. Pupils then plan and navigate themselves around a route in the local surrounding Pennine hills.

Orienteering

Pupils are taught basic orienteering skills and then complete courses around the school site and at Queens Park in Heywood.

Swimming/Personal Survival/Life Saving

Pupils are taught and assessed in the above activities at Rochdale swimming baths.

Mountain Biking

Pupils can be assessed in mountain biking as part of their GCSE studies. This starts at Hollingworth Lake and pupils must safely navigate a planned route around the surrounding countryside.

Key Stage 3 Coniston Trip

In May each year Key Stage 3 pupils are invited to participate in an Outdoor and Adventurous weekend, from a Friday to Sunday, on Lake Coniston in the Lake District. Activities include sailing, kayaking, high ropes courses, ghyll scrambling and orienteering.

Ski Trip

Each year we organise a ski trip to Andorra. This takes place during February half term and is open to pupils from all year groups.
