Why Are We Introducing Phone Pouches?

At Hollingworth Academy, we expect pupils who bring a mobile phone to school to have it with them throughout the day and secured in their Yondr phone pouch. Our expectation is not that pupils leave phones at home, but that they store them safely and responsibly in their pouch from the start of the school day until they leave the academy.

We are committed to creating a calm, safe and focused environment where every pupil can thrive. Following national guidance and growing evidence about the impact of mobile phones on young people's learning, behaviour and wellbeing, we are introducing phone pouches to support a phone-free school day.

Research suggests that the presence of mobile phones, even when they are not actively being used, can distract attention, reduce concentration and negatively impact academic performance. By securely storing phones during the school day, pupils can fully engage in lessons, participate confidently in discussions and focus on learning without the interruption of notifications, messages or social media.

Phone pouches also play an important role in safeguarding. They help to prevent unauthorised filming and photography, protecting the privacy and dignity of both pupils and staff. Schools that have adopted similar systems have reported reductions in cyberbullying, online conflict and social media disputes that can often continue into the school day and disrupt learning and relationships.

Just as importantly, a phone-free environment encourages pupils to interact face-to-face, build stronger friendships and develop the communication skills that are essential for life beyond school. Break and lunch times become opportunities for meaningful social interaction rather than screen time, helping young people to build positive relationships and a stronger sense of belonging within the academy community.

We believe this initiative will contribute to:

  •   Improved focus, concentration and engagement in lessons.
  •   Reduced cyberbullying and online conflict.
  •   Fewer social media disputes affecting relationships and learning.
  •   Prevention of unauthorised filming and photography.
  •   Stronger face-to-face relationships and social skills.
  •   A calmer, safer and more inclusive school environment.

Phone-free schooling is becoming increasingly common both nationally and internationally. By introducing phone pouches, we are taking a positive step towards ensuring that every pupil can learn, socialise and succeed in an environment free from unnecessary digital distractions.

Phone Pouch Care, Replacement and Expectations

Pupils are expected to bring their phone pouch to school every day and take reasonable care of it. The pouch remains the responsibility of the pupil and should not be damaged, tampered with or intentionally broken. In the event that a pouch is lost or damaged, a replacement fee of £10 will apply. Replacement pouches can be arranged through the pupil's Head of Year.

The academy operates a clear sanction pathway for pupils who do not follow the phone pouch expectations, including pupils who fail to bring their pouch to school or do not secure their phone appropriately. Full details of this process are outlined in parent communications and within the academy's Behaviour Policy. Our approach is designed to ensure consistency, fairness and support for all pupils as we establish a phone-free learning environment.
